When Your Mood Follows Your Cycle

Feeling more irritable, anxious, or low in the days before your period is common but that doesn’t mean you have to just accept it as unavoidable. At ORIGEN Healthcare, we take the mood-related side of PMS seriously, with an evaluation focused on your emotional symptoms and practical strategies to help you feel more like yourself throughout your cycle.

Our psychiatric team focuses specifically on the mood and emotional symptoms of PMS. For physical symptoms like cramping or bloating, an OBGYN is often the right starting point alongside our care.

If your mood symptoms feel severe or significantly disrupt your daily life, you may be dealing with something more intense than typical PMS. Visit our PMDD Treatment page to learn about Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

Why Patients Choose Origen for PMS Mood Support

PMS mood symptoms are often dismissed as something to just push through. Our approach centers on taking those symptoms seriously and offering practical, evidence-based support.

What Is PMS?

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) refers to a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms that occur in the one to two weeks before menstruation and typically resolve once your period begins. PMS is extremely common, affecting up to 75% of menstruating women to some degree.

Common mood symptoms include irritability, anxiety, mood swings, low energy, and mild sadness. Physical symptoms bloating, breast tenderness, headaches, and fatigue are often best addressed alongside your OBGYN or primary care provider.

For most women, PMS symptoms are manageable and don’t significantly disrupt daily life. When mood symptoms become more intense and start affecting work, relationships, or daily functioning, it may point to Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) instead a distinct, more severe condition.

They’ve helped me with my treater resistant depression to the extent that I’m able to leave my house and socialize with others. Very well informed and empathetic provider. Being an esketamine (spravato) center was a great bonus. Highly recommended psychiatric services.

Very unprofessional, long hold times. 3 weeks waiting for a response on a simple consult. When they promised to call within a week and didn't. i had to reach 3 weeks later and have them try so set an appointment (they forgot about me). And for that they took 2 extra days to even respond. This is ridiculous. Go somewhere else for actual professional care.

I've been with Nezira for a long time as my therapist/med manager and she's been amazing! With all of my different medication and mental health needs she always has a solution- and she always knows how to offer support. Even if one medication works she has a secondary option or even a third option to replace what if something doesn't work. She offers support in times of need as well, always making me feel seen and heard. I highly recommend; shes truly amazing!!

Nazira is an exceptional healthcare provider. I actually continued my care with her at her new office after seeing her at a different office previously. She always makes me feel heard and that she is truly listening to what I am saying. She is extremely flexible and offers telehealth appointments which is great as I am a nurse also and my schedule is busy. Her office staff are always welcoming and quick to respond when I have any questions or send patient portal messages. I highly recomend this office for your mental health needs..

FAQ About PMS Treatment in Omaha

Don’t see the question you have? Call out learn today to ask any questions you have about the treatment options we provide.

Should I see a psychiatric provider or an OBGYN for PMS?

An OBGYN is often the right starting point for physical PMS symptoms like cramping or bloating. A psychiatric provider can help specifically with the mood-related symptoms of PMS, such as irritability, anxiety, or low mood, especially if they feel significant or are worsening over time.

PMS symptoms are typically mild and don’t significantly disrupt daily life. If your mood symptoms are severe enough to affect work, relationships, or daily functioning, a psychiatric evaluation can help determine if you meet criteria for PMDD instead.

Regular exercise, consistent sleep, reduced caffeine and alcohol, and stress management techniques like relaxation exercises have been shown to help some women with PMS-related mood symptoms.

For milder PMS, lifestyle changes and supportive strategies are often tried first. If mood symptoms are more significant, a psychiatric evaluation can determine whether medication, such as an SSRI, may be appropriate.

Many psychiatric evaluation and treatment services are covered by insurance. Our team can help verify your specific benefits before your first appointment.

PMS is very common, affecting up to 75% of menstruating women to some degree. Most cases involve mild symptoms, though severity can vary significantly from person to person and cycle to cycle.
